The ten thaats
A thaat is a parent scale of seven swaras, one of each, from which raags are grouped. These are the ten of Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande's system, the one the book's notation follows.
| Thaat | Swaras | ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ | Practise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bilawal | SaReGaMaPaDhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Khamaj | SaReGaMaPaDhani | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Kafi | SaRegaMaPaDhani | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Asavari | SaRegaMaPadhani | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Bhairavi | SaregaMaPadhani | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Bhairav | SareGaMaPadhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Kalyan | SaReGaMaPaDhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Marwa | SareGaMaPaDhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Purvi | SareGaMaPadhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
| Todi | SaregaMaPadhaNi | ਸਰਗਮਪਧਨ | Palta |
Unlike the taal and raag pages, this list is standard knowledge rather than a reading of the book. A dash under a swara is komal; a stroke over Ma is teevra.
In the studio's palta builder, a thaat gives you its seven swaras up and down alike; a raag gives you only the swaras it takes, in its own aroh and avroh.
